MLV - A  VOICE TO RECKON WITH
Any discussion on MLV’s music will be incomplete without mentioning her contribution to the tinsel world.  MLV took her bow as a playback singer in M.K.Thyagaraja Bhagavathar’s home production”Raja Mukthi”(1948). But a pleasant surprise was “Jaathi Vairam neethi rahidhame” tuned in  Western style by M.S,Gnanamani. This film also had another song of MLV…”Kalaa nikethe Kerala maathe namasthe namasthe”.
“Aashadeepam”(1953) had melodious musical score by V.Dakshinamoorthy. MLV and P.Leela jointly sang the “Jagadhaanandha karaka” in Naattai ragam as  title song and a dance number in ragamalika (Khamboji, Shanmukhapriya..etc)  “Jananee jayikka neenal…” .  MLV’s solo song in Arabhi ”Sharanam mayil vahana” is simply mesmerizing.  The hindi movie “Chori Chori” (1956) had a beautiful Thillana in Hindolam with Mohanam and Kaapi interludes  by MLV. Picturised on Kumari Kamala’s dance, it was choreographed by K.N.Dhandayudapani Pillai with Shankar Jaikishan scoring the music for the film. MLV sang “”Daari kaadu na balu” for “Bedara Kannappa” (1954) composed by R.Sudarsanam. “Bhookailas”(1958) had “Ksheerabdhi varadhaama naaga sayanaa” for Kumari Kamala’s dance (tuned by R.Sudarsanam and R.Govardanam). T.G.Lingappa scored music for Jayadevar Ashtapadhi exclusively. With this film, MLV bid farewell to the tinsel world and returned to Carnatic classical performances and reigned supreme till her untimely demise.“Enge Maraindhanayo..” sung by MLV for “Amaradeepam” (1956) was specially tuned by her mentor G.N.Balasubramaniam in the ragam Subhapanthuvarali. T.Chalapathi Rao and G.Ramanathan were the music directors. K.S.Gopalakrishnan who turned out to be a famous director in later years was the lyricist.
To sum up, whether it was pure classical, semi-classical, dance oriented, devotional, folklore or a western style song, MLV made it a point to register her impeccable style to make it an evergreen hit.
